Dodgers even up World Series as Yamamoto goes the distance
TORONTO (KYMA) - The Los Angeles Dodgers battled their way to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to tie the World Series at one game apiece.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto played the hero tonight, pitching a complete game. Along the way he struck out eight and allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks. It's the first time a pitcher has pitched a complete game in consecutive playoff outings since Curt Schilling did so in 2001 for the Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers were able to get out to an early lead in the first inning with two outs thanks to a double from Freddie Freeman and an RBI-single from Will Smith.
One of Yamamoto's few mishaps came in the third frame when he hit George Springer with a pitch. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. subsequently singled to left field, allowing Springer to advance to third base. He was eventually brought home on a sacrifice fly from Alejandro Kirk.
Then the pitching duel got down to the nitty-gritty. Following Los Angeles' run, Kevin Gausman retired 17 batters in a row. Will Smith pulled through again to break up the lifeless offense with a soaring home run in the seventh inning. Two batters later, Max Muncy followed suit with a solo shot of his own to bring the game to 3-1.
As for Yamamoto, he retired every batter he faced after allowing the Blue Jays lone run of the game.
The Dodgers were able to tack on two more runs, leading to the Game 2 victory.
