Vincent Memorial wins first game of season
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA) - It's been a long wait for the Vincent Memorial Scots, but the streak is finally over.
The Scots picked up their first win of the season, shutting out the Southwest Eagles 20-0 in a strong performance Friday night.
Early on, the tone was set by Andre Longoria, who sparked the Scots with a huge kickoff return weaving through defenders and racing up the sideline to put Vincent Memorial in prime field position.
The momentum carried over right away, as quarterback Patricio Carranza rolled out and connected with Longoria for the game's opening touchdown, giving the Scots a quick 7-0 lead.
Southwest struggled to find rhythm early, punting on their first possession. The Eagles caught a break when Abe Moreno recovered a Vincent Memorial fumble, setting up their offense with great field position.
Despite flashes of promise including big plays by Adrian Jauregi and Joe Johnston, the Eagles couldn't capitalize in the red zone.
Vincent Memorial's defense tightened up from there, keeping Southwest off the board entirely. The Scots tacked on two more scores and held firm the rest of the way to secure a 20-0 victory, marking their first of the season.
With the win, the Scots build some much-needed momentum heading into the final stretch of Desert League play while Southwest will look to regroup after missed chances on their home turf.
