Mike Shildt announces his retirement
Mike Shildt is retiring with two years left on his contract, citing the stresses of baseball as the main reason
SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt announced Monday morning he is retiring with two years left on his contract, saying the baseball season has taken a severe toll on him.
He attributed his need to retire on the mental, physical and emotional stress the season had.
The news comes just nine days after the Padres were eliminated by the Chicago Cubs in a tense three-game Wild Card Series in the Windy City.
The 57-year-old did have success, leading San Diego to the postseason in each of his two seasons at the helm, compiling a 183-141 record.
Before joining the Padres organization in early 2022 as a player development coach, Shildt managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018 to 2021 and found success in the NL Central.
As a result of Shildt's early departure, Padres general manager A.J. Preller said the search for a new manager will begin with the sam goal as this year, winning a championship.
