Kofa’s Devyn Chavez wins city championship
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - It was a big day on the greens at Mesa Del Sol Golf Course, as golfers from across Yuma County teed off for the City Championship and when the final scores came in, it was Kofa junior Devyn Chavez standing at the top of the leaderboard.
Chavez shot a smooth 75, edging out Gila Ridge senior Trent Karvoski by just one stroke to claim the individual title. The win capped off a strong performance for the Kings, who finished second overall in the team standings with a 378 (+41).
Kofa senior Mateo Heras also cracked the top three, carding an 80 (+4) to help the Kings secure their runner-up finish behind Gila Ridge, who won the team title at 339 (+28).
Rounding out the top five were Alanni Garcia of Cibola and Jakub Lane Kallinger of Gila Ridge, both finishing with 91s on the day.
Other standout performances included Jagmohinder Singh of Yuma and Gavin Schreiber of Gila Ridge, who each posted 94s, while Kyler Wright of Cibola shot a 98.
Team scores saw Cibola finishing third, Yuma High in fourth, and San Luis and Somerton rounding out the field.
For Chavez, the victory adds to an impressive season as he continues to establish himself as one of the premier golfers in the region and one to watch heading into postseason play.
