Gila Ridge’s Trent Karvoski eyes another city title before state
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - For Gila Ridge senior Trent Karvoski, golf has been more than a sport. It's been a way of life.
Now in his final season with the Hawks, he's not only wrapping up one of the best golf careers in school history, but also preparing for one last run at a City Championship.
Karvoski will compete in the Yuma City Championship on Tuesday, where he'll face off against top golfers from across the area. The three-time city champion says this event is one he always looks forward to.
"All the local schools are gonna be there. It's always a great time," Karvoski said. "You get some good competition, see friends from other schools, and my goal this year is just to get under par. I've scored a 77 the last three years, and I want to break that."
That consistency has defined Karvoski's time at Gila Ridge. Head Coach James Kuzniak says his senior standout has been remarkably reliable and even better off the course.
"He's been on every match this season," Kuzniak said. "His worst score might’ve been a 38 or 39, and for most golfers that’s a great round. But it's more than that — he's a leader, always helping his teammates. He'll stop hitting balls to go work with a freshman who's still learning. That says a lot about his character."
Karvoski's leadership and drive have helped turn the Hawks into a steady contender. He says the competitive environment within the team keeps him sharp.
"My teammates push me every single day," Karvoski said. "They want to beat me and I love that. It keeps me at my game."
A golfer since childhood, Karvoski says he "lived on the golf course" growing up, especially during the pandemic when he'd join classes online while practicing his swing. Now, his dedication has caught attention from colleges across the country.
"It's been very cool to know people I've never talked to are reaching out," he said. "They see what I've done, and it feels good."
As he looks ahead to the state tournament in November, Karvoski says he's focused on enjoying every last round as a Hawk.
"It's been a great year with the team, a lot of good friends and good memories," he said. "I'm gonna miss this."
