CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Koala joey emerges from mother’s pouch
(CBS, KYMA) - A koala joey at Australia's Melbourne Zoo emerged from her mother's pouch for the first time, recently shared footage shows.
Video sent to Storyful Tuesday shows the young joey named Peach clinging to mum Pretzel as the pair crawled around their enclosure.
"Melbourne Zoo is delighted to welcome new koala joey Peach, who has just emerged from the pouch of first-time mum Pretzel just in time for spring," the zoo said in a statement.
Zookeeper Erin Myers said Pretzel was "being a really good mum, doing all the right things."
"Peach is growing really fast as well, which is so nice to see. She's currently about the size and weight of a small sourdough loaf," she added.
According to the zoo, koalas only experience one month of gestation and then the newborn joey spends six months in their mother's pouch.
