Fort Worth Zoo celebrates birth of female Asian elephant calf
FORT WORTH, Texas (CBS, KYMA) - Fort Worth Zoo celebrated an addition to its Asian elephant herd, recently announcing the birth of a healthy, and adorable, female calf.
In a press release, the zoo said it was "thrilled" about the birth of the first female Asian elephant calf since 2013. The baby, born on August 18 at 3:36 a.m. Central, came in at about 36-inches-tall and weighed 250 pounds.
"This bundle of joy was born to mom, Bluebonnet, who was the first elephant calf born in the history of the zoo in 1998," the zoo wrote. "The calf's father is Romeo, making this calf a full sibling to almost four-year-old brother, Brazos."
The calf joins a four-generation family, with the matriarch, Rasha, "one of only a few great grandmother Asian elephants in North America," according to the zoo.
"The calf was standing within six minutes of birth, nursing within two hours and maneuvering her trunk well almost immediately, all indications of a healthy baby elephant," the zoo wrote. "Both mother and baby have been quietly bonding behind the scenes since the calf’s birth in August."
The baby is now on-habitat and the zoo invited the public to vote on a name for her. To vote, click here. The voting will last until October 6.
