Prosecutors request bail be denied to Sacramento man suspected of shooting into ABC TV station’s lobby
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Prosecutors are requesting bail be denied to a Sacramento man suspected of shooting into ABC television station's lobby.
Police say Anibal Hernandez-Santana fired into the ABC10 building Friday. No one was injured in the shooting despite the building being occupied.
Prosecutors say they believe the shooting was politically motivated, with investigators saying a search of his car found an anti-Trump book and a not mentioning the Epstein files and threatened FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
"In terms of motive, we believe that it was politically motivated. You know, when you're looking to put a case together, you're always looking at circumstantial evidence. And what we found, frankly, at his house the police did was there was a calendar that was stuck to the refrigerator, like one of those magnets, and on the date of September 19, the date of the shooting, he wrote on the counter, do the next scary thing?
We believe that the crimes here were motivated to attack a free press, a free media, which I believe to be one of the pillars of our democracy, and being politically motivated. And so today, what we're doing is we're going to hold them accountable, because we will not tolerate that here in Sacramento.
You had the Jimmy Kimmel cancelation. You also had a protest there early in the day, and then you have his writings. You have the note that he put on his calendar, the note that he had next to the anti-Trump book. And so I think when you put all that together, you begin to paint a picture that this was politically motivated. This target wasn't a random target. We believe that the target was specific, and as we delve into the evidence that we are collecting right now, we'll be able to elaborate further.
I've seen shooting and murder cases. You know, you don't often see cases of political bodies, but obviously we're seeing more and more of that, unfortunately, and really, my message is this, you know, any violence in South middle, including political violence, will not be tolerated. We will make sure that somebody who engages in that conduct and poses a threat to public safety will be held accountable, and that's what we're doing here today."
