Car flies off ferry terminal in New Zealand

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - CCTV captured the moment a drunk driver careened off the road and through a bike shelter at a ferry terminal in Auckland, New Zealand last month.

Footage released by Auckland Transport shows a 4WD crossing in front of a bus and over a footpath at speed and straight through the shelter at Matiatia Ferry Terminal.

Glass and metal can be seen flying everywhere, as the car barrels through, before nosediving into the water.

A second camera shows bystanders throwing the driver life rings, before the car sinks.

According to news reports, police issued the driver, a 73-year-old woman, an infringement notice for excess breath alcohol.

The vehicle was pulled from the water and returned to the owner.
