Federal judge rules National Guard deployment to L.A. as unlawful

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A federal judge has ruled that the Trump Administration violated the law by sending the National Guard to Los Angeles.

The California judge's ruling found June's mobilization violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the president from using the military as a domestic police force without approval from Congress.

4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines were sent to L.A. after protests in the city over President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

Several hundred National Guard members remain in the city, but all the Marines have returned to their regular stations.

Tuesday's ruling orders the administration to return control of the remaining troops to Governor Gavin Newsom, and to stop using the military to "execute or assist in the execution of federal law."
