Imperial dominates Vincent Memorial behind Deren Hueso’s four-touchdown night
Sophomore running back fuels Tigers' 49–6 rout with three rushing scores and a kick return touchdown
IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Sophomore running back Deren Hueso stole the show, scoring four total touchdowns — three on the ground and one on a kick return — as Imperial High School opened its season in dominant fashion, crushing Vincent Memorial 49-6 Thursday night.
The tone was set early when the Tigers defense intercepted Scots quarterback Patricio Carranza on his first pass attempt of the season during the first drive of the game. Imperial quickly capitalized, as Hueso punched in the game's opening score.
Hueso was just getting started though. He found the end zone two more times, just in the first half.
Vincent Memorial showed some life late in the second quarter. Carranza found Ricardo Vizcarra on a short crossing route, and the speedy receiver turned it into a big gain inside the Tigers 30 yard line. A few plays later, Carranza rolled out under pressure and lofted a pass that Vizcarra hauled in for the Scots lone touchdown of the night.
That was as close as it would get. Imperial’s defense clamped down the rest of the way, and Hueso added a kick return score to put the game out of reach.
With the win, Imperial starts the season undefeated with a 2-0 record and looks every bit the contender in the Imperial Valley League. Madison will make the trip to the Tiger's den next Friday.
On the other hand, Vincent Memorial starts their season 0-1 and will travel to Hoover next Friday.
