Dangerous heat returns midweek through weekend

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - An extended stretch of extreme heat is setting up across Yuma and Imperial Counties this week, with temperatures climbing close to record levels.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning from Wednesday morning through Friday evening for both counties.

Highs are expected to reach 112 to 116 degrees, with overnight lows staying in the upper 80s to near 90 offering little relief.

This dangerous heat is expected to create major to extreme health risks, especially for those without access to cooling. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

While monsoon storms are expected to stay east through midweek, thunderstorm chances could increase by the weekend, possibly bringing gusty winds and isolated downpours into the lower deserts.

Conditions may improve slightly by early next week as the high-pressure ridge weakens, but triple-digit heat will continue.
