SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - California State Democrats unveiled new legislation Monday calling for a special election in November to address the redrawing of congressional maps.
The legislation is part of an effort spearheaded by California Governor Gavin Newsom to put redistricting before voters this fall.
State lawmakers reconvened Monday afternoon following their summer break and are expected to move quickly to set up the special election.
Congressional lawmakers joined State Democrats during a press conference that day.
"We believe in the voters and the people of this state and we are going to put it to them to decide their own fate, do they want to continue to be abused by the republicans in the House of Representatives or do they want a change of course," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
"They are so scared to face real oversight and accountability that they're rigging the system to stay in power so we're here today to make it clear that we're not going to sit on the sidelines and we're going to play offense," said Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA).
Meanwhile, State Republicans also had their say on the matter.
"Governor Newsom this is nothing more than a power grab, it's a gamble and we as republicans here in Sacramento say we want non-partisan census redistricting for the whole country," said California State Senator Tony Strickland (R-36th District).
"This fight is not a Republican fight, a Democrat fight, a Green Party fight...this is about the voice of the people and we are not going to stand idly by and allow them to weaken and dilute our voice," said California State Senator Suzette Valladares (R-23rd District).
