President Trump announces he will be sending National Guard troops to D.C.

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - On Monday, President Donald Trump announced he would be sending National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. as part of a crime-fighting effort.

At least 800 troops are slated to be sent to the capital.

President Trump said that his actions are needed to "rescue" the U.S. capital from a surge in crime.

According to a White House official, the troops "are being deployed to protect federal assets, provide a safe environment for law enforcement officers to make arrests, and deter violent crime with visible law enforcement presence."

National Guard members were sent a notification saying the order covers the period from August 11 to September 25.
