New Mexico teen in custody for shooting and killing his Uber driver

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - An Albuquerque teen is in custody for the execution style murder of his Uber driver.

This all unfolded Thursday when police say 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez told his driver to pull over, and then shot the man, identified as Joseph Andrus, several times.

Andrus died at the scene.

Sanchez then stole the car, which was later found at his girlfriend's house in southwest Albuquerque.

In a criminal complaint filed with the court, Sanchez told police he picked Andrus at random, and committed the killing because he wanted to "let some steam off due to so much stress."

At his first court appearance Saturday morning in Metro Court, prosecutors told the judge they were filing a motion for pretrial detention to keep Sanchez in jail ahead of any trial.

A district court judge will hear that motion next week.
