No injuries reported in San Luis marketplace fire
SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA, KECY) - Several businesses were destroyed after a large fire ripped through a marketplace in San Luis, Mexico.
The fire started around 3 a.m. Wednesday on Seventh Street and Durango Alley. A total of six businesses are totally lost.
"It took us about two and a half hours to control the fire. Eight fire trucks from four fire stations with about 40 firefighters were on scene," said Cmdr. Noe Gonzalez with San Luis R.C. Volunteers Fire Department.
Cmdr. Gonzalez says fortunately, no injuries were reported, one dog was rescued and one pick up truck that was parked at a house behind the market place was damaged.
It's too early to determine the cost of all that was destroyed and damaged.
"Not at this time because there were several businesses. Each business is doing their own calculation to find out exactly how much they lost," said Gonzalez.
One local says the marketplace was there for over 50 years and it's sad to see it reduced to ashes and debris.
"It was awful. Thank God no one was sleeping here they wouldn't survive. The flame was so high you could feel the heat across the street," said Francisco Villapudua, who lives near the burned marketplace.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
