Five shot in shooting at Fort Stewart, suspect in custody

UPDATE (1:43 PM): Officials with Fort Stewart say everyone injured in Wednesday shooting at the base is expected to recover.

According to the Brigadier General John W. Lubas, people were shot and the suspect is in custody.

Base officials say the shooter used a personal handgun in the shooting and not a military weapon.

Investigators are looking into how the firearm got onto the base, but commanding officers say they believe the base is safe and secure.

"I would also like to thank the brave soldiers who immediately intervened and subdued the shooter. These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties," Lubas expressed.

The suspected shooter has been identified as 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford.

Base officials say they have not established a motive for the shooting yet, but they did confirm the victims in the shooting were Radford's coworkers.

FORT STEWART, Ga. (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Fort Stewart, near coastal Georgia, went under lockdown late Wednesday morning due to an active shooter.

A social media post for the U.S. Army base later said the shooter was no longer a threat and had been taken into custody.

The post said five soldiers were shot in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the fort. The soldiers were hospitalized, with the nature of their injuries unclear.

More than 10,000 people, including soldiers, families and Army employees, live on the post 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

Fort Stewart is home to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division.

This is a developing story.
