Kamala Harris to not run for governor of California

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Former Vice President Kamala Harris will not run for governor of California.

The announcement ends months of speculation after she lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump.

In a prepared statement, Harris said in part, "For now, my leadership-and public service-will not be in elected office."

Two people close to Harris said that preserving her ability to launch a 2028 White House run played a part in her decision.

In the near term, Harris is considering nonprofit work and a possible PAC, another source close to Harris said.

She is also poised to campaign for other Democrats in the midterms.
