Dolphin family reunited after calf freed from net

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - A joint rescue operation was conducted near Batemans Bay, New South Wales, to disentangle a bottlenose dolphin calf from a fishing net, footage sent to Storyful on July 25 shows.

Video, which the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans (ORRCA) said was taken on July 24, shows crews from the Sea World Foundation, New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Marine Rescue and ORRCA all banding together to free the young dolphin.

The calf was first spotted heavily entangled in braided fishing line, which restricted its swimming ability, in mid-June by members of the local community, and reported to ORRCA.

"After further sightings were confirmed, NPWS led the planning of the multi-agency rescue operation with the Sea World Foundation team traveling south to assist," ORRCA told Storyful. "With multiple vessels on the water and ORRCA drone operators and members assisting from the shore, the mum and calf were spotted just off MacKenzies Beach mid Thursday morning with the Sea World Foundation team managing to catch the calf and successfully remove the entanglement."
