Electric hypercar in Britain drives upside down
(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - An electric hypercar in Britain is breaking the rules of racing and gravity.
The McMurty Spéirling is the first car to drive upside down, using fans that spin 23,000 rotations per minute, generating twice the car's weight in downforce.
Instead of wings, it uses a vacuum system that sucks the car to the ground, or even the ceiling.
Engineers proved it on a rotating test rig, where the $1.3 million speedster drove fully inverted.
"The downforce works in any direction. I've driven the car, I've spun the car. If you spin, you just press the brake and your downforce still works, so you'll stop before you even leave the track," said David Turton with McMurty Automotive.
McMurtry says the technology could one day make regular cars safer by improving grip and helping drivers stop faster in emergencies.
