Plea deal for accused 9/11 mastermind thrown out

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A plea deal for the alleged architect of the 9/11 attacks has been thrown out by a federal appeals court.

On Friday, the court threw out an agreement which would have spared Khalid Sheikh Mohammed from execution.

Mohammed has been described as the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks by al-Qaida in 2001.

The deal which was tossed out was negotiated by military prosecutors and Pentagon officials who called for life sentences for Mohammed without the possibility of parole.

Mohammed is accused of developing the scheme to hijack planes and crash them into the World Trade Center, the U.S. Pentagon, and other targets.

The attacks on 9/11 were the deadliest attacks ever on U.S. soil.
