Rescue teams evacuate North Carolina residents amid ‘life-threatening’ flooding

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Rescue teams conducted evacuations in Chapel Hill as flash flooding submerged the North Carolina town Sunday.

Footage captured by Allison Bashor shows rescuers dragging residents to safety using an inflatable boat, as streets appeared swallowed by floodwaters in the Camelot Village neighborhood.

According to the town of Chapel Hill, several areas of the municipality were closed due to flash flooding and a downed tree.

"First responders are in the process of evacuating some units within Camelot Village," the town said, adding that transportation and shelter was being coordinated for affected residents.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of "life-threatening" flash flooding for five counties until 1:15 a.m. Eastern on Monday.

According to the NWS, one to three more inches of rain could accumulate in the area.
