San Diego boy speaks out after surviving central Texas flooding

SAN DIEGO (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A boy from San Diego is speaking out after surviving the catastrophic flood in central Texas, which took the lives of dozens of people.

11-year-old Kaelan Kubena says he is grateful to be home safe with his family, but worried about the others still missing.

"Some counselor from the other rooms, which got flooded came into our cabin, said there was a flash flood. Now, we didn't actually know those one because we were higher up like more elevated, but eventually we looked outside and we just saw like an ocean out there. It's just like completely destroying everything.

We saw like a whole cabin just floating down and that's when we knew like those things were getting actually real out there...We were starting to realize that this was a real natural disaster crisis.

So once we got to the business office and the sun started like, rise or it just got more dirt daytime, we saw the river fully and it was just we instantly knew we gotta go. This is not fun like safe because the way we get into our camp, there's like three different ways, but mostly we go through like on top of a dam...which is completely flooded at the moment.

Counselors they were amazing during this like they had wise decisions as a leader They took us to safety when they needed to they made quick decisions they risked their lives for us, and I think everybody should be grateful for that."

More than 80 people died, with most of them being swept away in the raging current, and officials warn that number will grow later in the day.
