Heat builds across the Desert Southwest, extreme temperatures expected next week

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - After a warm Fourth of July weekend, temperatures across Yuma and Imperial Counties are on the rise, with even hotter days ahead.

Forecast highs for Sunday are expected to reach between 106 and 110 degrees across the lower deserts, including Yuma, Somerton, El Centro and Brawley.

The National Weather Service is calling for moderate heat risk for much of the area through the end of the weekend.

But forecasters say the heat will intensify further heading into the work week. By Tuesday, a strong ridge of high pressure will settle over the region, sending temperatures soaring possibly approaching 114 to 115 degrees in some communities.

While an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for Maricopa and Pinal Counties, similar advisories could be issued for Yuma and Imperial as models become more certain.

The upcoming heat stretch is expected to last through at least Thursday, with little to no relief overnight and dry conditions continuing across the area. No significant monsoon activity is in the forecast.

Health officials are urging residents to take the usual precautions stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and look out for heat-related symptoms.
