Two dead in ongoing active shooter situation in Idaho

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - At least two people are dead in an ongoing active shooter situation in northern Idaho.

Firefighters were reportedly ambushed while responding to a brush fire near Coeur d'Alene Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say there are an unknown number of casualties and injuries as the area is still taking sniper fire from a suspect or suspects.

"We now have two deaths, we have an unknown amount of casualties, we still have civilians that are coming off that mountain, we might have civilians that are stuck or in shock on that mountain, so this is a very, very fresh situation," said Sheriff Robert Norris with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

There is a shelter-in-place ordered for everyone near the area.

Authorities say they are prepared to neutralize the suspect.

"They are not at this point and time showing any evidence of wanting to surrender, so as soon as somebody has a clear shot, I encourage them to take that shot and neutralize the threat," Sheriff Norris spoke.

Coeur d'Alene is a city of 55,000 residents near the border with Washington.
