Toros football program set to compete in first varsity season
After two years at the junior varsity level, Somerton will now officially be involved in the highest level of prep football
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Somerton football program will be taking the next big step in its early existence, competing in varsity for the 2025 season.
Head coach Cyril Atherton will be leading the program, and already has his team prepping, attending Yuma Catholic's 7-on-7 camp this week.
"An event like this always helps, it has its pros in regards to offensive and defense," Atherton said.
Getting the rare opportunity to build a program completely from scratch, Atherton believes there's one thing he wants his team to focus on.
"The first thing is competing, you know if you compete then things happen, and a lot of times they work in our favor," Atherton said.
Atherton also claims two position groups have stood out to him throughout the offseason.
"We've got a great line, our linemen on offense and defensive line," Atherton said.
With just over a month to the start of the regular season, maintaining consistency will be another key point for Atherton and his coaching staff.
"As long as our kids can compete and compete at the level in which they're playing, then things turn around for us," Atherton said.
The Toros will open their campaign on the road against Copper Canyon on Aug 29.
