Yuma Catholic football hosts college showcase
Local athletes from Yuma and the Imperial Valley compete in front of college football coaches in the I-8 Football Prospect Camp.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Catholic hosted the I-8 Football Prospect Camp on Monday night, bringing together high school football players from across Yuma and Imperial County to compete in front of college coaches at Ricky Gwynn Stadium.
San Diego State was among several colleges in attendance, along with Ottawa University, New Mexico Highlands, Eastern New Mexico, Northern Montana State, and Highland Junior College.
The evening began with athletic testing, including the 40-yard dash and broad jump, giving coaches a chance to evaluate each athlete’s speed and explosiveness. From there, players transitioned into individual position drills.
Among the quarterbacks participating were Yuma Catholic senior Nash Ott and Holtville’s Alonso Cuevas, who went through a series of footwork and passing drills. In the trenches, YC’s Colton Pouquette stood out while leading the offensive linemen through their reps.
The night ended with competitive one-on-one matchups, where Holtville’s Alan Carillo made one of the top plays of the night, hauling in a contested catch against tight coverage. Imperial running back Deren Hueso also made his presence known, showcasing his agility and acceleration throughout the workout.
Yuma Catholic's Scout Reese capped off the evening with a touchdown pass during one of the final reps of the night.
Many of the same athletes will be back on the field Tuesday and Wednesday, as Yuma Catholic hosts a 7-on-7 jamboree featuring local high school programs.
