From Yuma to Tampa: Local soccer team set to represent the west at nationals
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Madrid, a youth soccer team made up of players from across Arizona, is headed to the National President's Cup in Tampa, Florida, after winning both the state title and the Far West Regionals.
The team includes eight players from Yuma County, the largest contingent on the roster, and is wrapping up its final season together after years of building chemistry on the pitch.
"It's just fun. That's the most important thing: Being out there with your friends, making memories," said player Ruben Perez. "Going to Florida, I mean, that's crazy. Who would have thought?"
With their sights set on the national title, players like Hector Soto say the motivation runs deeper than just trophies.
"We're doing this for each other, our families, our state. We have a big goal in mind," Soto said.
For many on the team, this team and opportunities like this are about more than soccer. It's a chance to launch their academic and athletic futures.
"Youth soccer is a great path to an education and furthering your career," said Noah Lansford, one of the players already committed to playing at the next level.
For the parents and coaches who've watched this team grow over the years, it's a moment of pride.
"This is definitely their last year," said head coach Ruben Perez Sr. "Extremely proud of the progress and maturity they've shown. Some of them have been playing together for up to eight years."
The National President's Cup runs July 11–15. Whether they bring home a trophy or not, the team says they're proud to carry Arizona's name on the national stage one final time.
