Machado’s blast the difference as Padres edge Brewers 1-0 in pitcher’s duel

KYMA

MILWAUKEE (KYMA, KECY) - Manny Machado delivered the only run of the game with a towering solo home run in the seventh inning, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday and sealing a road series victory.

Machado stepped in to lead off the top of the seventh and hammered a 3-2 pitch from Rob Zastryzny 425 feet into the left-center bleachers his third homer in the past four games and one that snapped Zastryzny's season-long scoreless streak at 10 appearances.

The solo shot was all San Diego needed thanks to a lockdown effort from their pitching staff. Rookie Ryan Bergert made his second career start and held the Brewers hitless into the fifth, working 5 1/3 innings of scoreless ball before giving way to the bullpen.

Yuki Matsui picked up the win, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth by striking out Sal Frelick on three pitches.

From there, the Padres bullpen took care of business. Five relievers combined to allow just four hits, with closer Robert Suarez recording the final three outs to earn his MLB leading 21st save. Suarez allowed a two-out single to Joey Ortiz in the ninth before inducing a popup from Brice Turang to end it.

The Brewers had their chances but couldn't capitalize, stranding 10 runners across the final five innings. Key opportunities fizzled out including a bases-loaded situation in the sixth and runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta was nearly untouchable through six innings, striking out six and walking two in a scoreless outing. The Padres didn't record a hit until Tyler Wade’s leadoff single in the sixth but they made their one big swing count.

The win pushes San Diego to 37-27 as they head home to face the defending World Series champion Dodgers on Monday.
