Calexico falls in CIF Division 3 title game to University City

SAN DIEGO (KYMA, KECY) - A remarkable season came to an abrupt end for the Calexico Bulldogs on Saturday as they suffered a tough 12-1 loss to University City in the CIF San Diego Section Division 3 championship game.

The defeat snapped Calexico's four-game winning streak and closed the book on an otherwise dominant 23-5-1 season for the Bulldogs. It was a rare lopsided loss for a team that had given up an average of just 3.28 runs per game prior to Saturday's finale.

From the start, the Centurions took control. They brought the bats and never looked back, scoring more runs than they had in any game all season. University City (20-12) extended its own winning streak to six games with the title-clinching performance.

On the mound, University City leaned on a strong one-two punch. Tennessee commit AJ Curry was lights out, striking out eight over five innings and giving up just one earned run on three hits. Nolan Nunes followed, tossing two shutout innings and allowing just one hit.

The two also contributed at the plate. Curry went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, while Nunes added a triple of his own, drove in a run, and crossed the plate twice.

The Centurions' offense was relentless. Ethan Antenore had a career day, going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, a stolen base, and a run scored. Jayden Parker matched him with two hits, two stolen bases, and four RBIs of his own.

Despite the loss, Calexico saw fight from its leaders. David Lara battled on the hill for three innings and Randy Baez reached base three times while swiping two bags.

Ander Garcia also reached base in three of four plate appearances and added a stolen base. Jose Ortega came in relief for the Bulldogs as well holding things scoreless for 2 innings.

While the Bulldogs will surely be disappointed by the final score, the 2025 season will be remembered as one of the most successful in program history, highlighted by a deep playoff run, consistent pitching, and a 23-win season.
