FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Showers and storms expected across the Desert Southwest

Tropical moisture from Alvin to bring rain, thunderstorms, and cooler temps through Sunday night.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It's a First Alert Action Day across the Desert Southwest as remnants from Tropical Storm Alvin bring a heightened risk for showers and storms this weekend.

Rain chances will increase beginning Saturday night and continue through Sunday night, with the greatest potential for storms arriving Sunday into the evening hours.

The National Weather Service and local meteorologists are tracking the potential for heavy downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Isolated flooding is also possible, especially in low-lying areas or spots prone to poor drainage.

A shift in the weather pattern is contributing to this system's impact, as a low-pressure system pulls tropical moisture northward into our region.

Rainfall totals are expected to range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch, though thunderstorms could drop heavier, localized amounts.

Alongside the wet weather, temperatures will be noticeably cooler this weekend — a brief break before a significant warm-up pushes highs back into the low to mid-100s by late next week.
