Calipatria softball dominates to take home first section title in program history
The Hornets jumped out to a big lead quickly as they went on to win the Division V-AA championship via mercy rule
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Calipatria softball (10-10) took home the first San Diego Section title in program history, beating Warner (15-4) 28-7 at UC San Diego Thursday.
The Hornets offense struck immediately, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
That lead would progressively get much bigger, especially after a 10 run top of the third putting the lead at 16-2.
Another 11 runs later, Calipatria would wrap things up early, sealing the win in the bottom of the fifth.
Head coach Joe Nuñez after the game said the honor of being the first team to bring a softball trophy back home was well earned by his team.
"I think it's good, these girls worked hard and and, they deserve it," Nuñez said.
In taking down the Wildcats, three seed Calipatria managed not only to pull off an upset of the bracket's one seed, but also beat a team who took them down twice in the regular season.
"I kept telling them we we can beat them we can beat them, we just got to stay focused and we got to play hard, we had to just believe in the process," Nuñez said.
Thursday's win was the last part of a complete turnaround for the Hornets, who initially started the season 0-6.
Senior pitcher Selena Cano says despite the rough stretch, the team knew improvement was possible.
"We kind of knew we were better, than the team that we were playing as, we kind of just needed to put in more work in order to really get there," Cano said.
With only three seniors on this year's squad, the Hornets may have won the first of many other titles to come in Calipatria.
