Trump meets with South Africa’s President at the White House
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A meeting in the Oval Office between U.S. President Donald Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa devolved when President Trump alleged there is a genocide in South Africa targeting white farmers.
The two leaders appeared cordial at first, but when asked about the decision to admit white South African to the U.S. as refugees, the meeting became tense.
While the South African leader was trying to respond to the accusation of a white genocide, Trump interrupted and played a video.
"There is criminality in our country. People who do get killed, unfortunately through criminal activity, are not only white people, majority of them are black people, and we have now," President Ramaphosa expressed.
"The farmers are not black. I don't say that's good or bad, but the farmers are not black. And the people that are being killed in large numbers, and you saw all those grave sites, and those are people that loved ones going I guess on a Sunday morning they told me to pay respect to their loved ones that were killed. Their heads chopped off. They died violently," Trump responded.
A pool report said the South African delegation initially appeared amused while the video played, but then looked uncomfortable.
Ramaphosa his minister of agriculture said the individuals in the video were part of a minority political party that is not in office.
Ramaphosa and other South Africans have strongly denied claims of a white genocide in their country.
