Homicides drop significantly in San Luis, Mexico

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA, KECY) - The Sonora State Police took control of security in San Luis, Mexico, for the second time in less than a year due to an increase in homicides.

From January through April, there were more than 100 homicides in San Luis, Mexico.

In the first three weeks since the state police took charge of security, they've only had two homicides, according to the Sonora Secretary of State.

The National Guard and the city police also participated in the security operations.

"They are supporting us and are strategic in order to achieve the results that citizens demand. Fortunately, we have had good results in these first weeks," said Adolfo Salazar, Secretary of State of Sonora.

Mayor Cesar Ivan Sandoval says that he will continue working with the governor of Sonora to bring down the number of homicides in the city.

"Great help and support from Governor Durazo, who was always busy protecting Sonora's security. This greatly helped the safety of San Luis residents and greatly contributed to the safety of San Luis Río Colorado," said Mayor Cesar Ivan Sandoval of San Luis, Mexico

The first week of May, violence decreased by 78%. Something that San Luis resident Carlos Valdadran has seen reflected on the streets of San Luis.

"Well, I've seen some changes, you don't hear much of what you used to see. Right now, we're doing well here in San Luis," said Valdadran.

But another resident isn't as optimistic, and believes the violence will never end.

"The kids who are trapped in the cartels are the ones with the problem, but that's how it's going to be. San luis was very peaceful here for years," said San Luis, Mexico resident Lucio Mejorado.

There is no exact time for how long the single command will remain in the city.

Sonora's secretary of government stays he will stay as long as necessary.
