FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Dangerous winds continue into Sunday morning
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Saturday is a First Alert Action Day as strong winds and widespread dust continue to impact the Desert Southwest, creating dangerous travel and air quality conditions across Yuma and Imperial Counties.
Gusty winds will persist through tonight, with the brunt of the impact expected between late Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
Wind gusts are forecast to range between 20 to 45 MPH, with peak gusts up to 50-55 MPH possible in certain areas, especially along western portions of Imperial County and in the Ocotillo area.
WIND ADVISORIES REMAIN IN EFFECT:
- Imperial Valley & El Centro: Through 2 a.m. Sunday – Gusts up to 50 MPH, reduced visibility from blowing dust.
- Ocotillo: In effect until 7 a.m. Sunday – Gusts up to 55 MPH expected.
In addition to the wind, an Air Quality Alert remains active for Yuma and Imperial Counties due to blowing dust.
These conditions are likely to cause unhealthy air quality, especially for sensitive groups including children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues.
Despite the wind and dust easing slightly on Sunday, breezy conditions will linger, accompanied by cooler-than-average temperatures for this time of year.
Looking ahead, temperatures will rise significantly by late next week, with highs expected to climb into the low to mid-100s across the region.
