Pediatric flu deaths reach 15-year high
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Influenza-related deaths for children in the United States has hit an all-time high not seen in nearly a decade and a half.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 216 fatal cases were reported this past flu season. That's the most pediatric deaths since 2009 and 2010, where nearly 300 deaths were confirmed.
Some health officials say that misinformation about vaccines is a key factor. New York State's health commissioner said that only one of 25 children who died this flu season were vaccinated and five others were too young to get the shot.
The CDC says that vaccinations for children and adults have dropped overall since the COVID-19 pandemic. It's recommended for everyone over six months old to get a flu shot every season.
