Recap of Yuma Elementary School District One’s governing board meeting & updates of the month

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Elementary School District One held their May governing board meeting.

Board members recognized excellence throughout the community at Tuesday's meeting.

Gila Vista Jr. High School was presented a banner for being recognized by the Arizona Department of Education as a purple star school for their dedication to supporting military-connected students and families.

Superintendent James Sheldahl was also recognized for his nomination for the Global Achievement Award for district leader. He's a finalist with three other district leaders nationally and will be announced at a national conference at the end of the year.

In addition to the multiple celebrations, board members discussed action items for the upcoming school year. One talk of the night was a proposed boundary change that could change the elementary and middle school attendance areas for the upcoming school year.

"Multiple new housing divisions are being built out. District One is experiencing significant growth in the number of families residing within the district within the Desert Mesa and Castle Dome Middle School attendance areas, resulting in both students, both schools, reaching near and exceeding their capacity," said District One Superintendent James Sheldahl.

But the superintendent says there are other nearby District One schools that do have capacity to accept new students. They share what areas could be impacted.

"College Acres and Del Prado Estates, the students in those two communities would attend Roosevelt Elementary School," said Sheldahl. "The students at Sierra Pacific would be welcomed at O.C. Johnson School…which has capacity to welcome these schools and maintain that smaller class size and personalization."

The board says transportation would be provided to students impacted on both ends of the move.

The board did not come to a final decision on the proposal and passed a motion to continue the discussion at the next May special meeting.
