New York woman and her grandchildren narrowly escape manhole explosion

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Dramatic footage published by a fire department in New York shows the moment an upstate New York family narrowly escaped a manhole explosion on April 19.

The Poughkeepsie Fire Department published the shocking footage. It said three manholes had exploded Saturday afternoon.

The footage shows Lisa Davis and her two grandchildren, ABC reported.

"I didn't know what to do except grab my grandson and run," Davis said.

She said, "I couldn't really run straight ahead of me to the corner because the manhole at the next corner blew up, too."

The explosions occurred amid elevated carbon monoxide levels in multiple local buildings.

"Companies found high levels of carbon monoxide in multiple buildings and the occupants of all the buildings on that block were evacuated until the gas levels could be mitigated," the department said.

No injuries were reported.
