Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs vetoes the Arizona ICE Act
YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed Senate Bill (SB) 1164, also known as the Arizona ICE Act, last Friday.
According to Our Voice, Our Vote Arizona, SB1164 is a bill which would have "required state and local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration officers" to arrest, detain and remove undocumented immigrants.
In her veto letter to Warren Petersen, the President of the Arizona State Senate who sponsored the bill, Governor Hobbs said in part, "I will continue to work with the federal government on true border security, but we should not force state and local officials to take marching orders from Washington, DC."
Sena Mohammed, the organization's Executive Director, issued the following statement regarding Hobbs vetoing SB1164:
"We are deeply grateful to Gov. Hobbs for having the courage to stand up and say the Arizona ICE Act goes too far. Vetoing this bill was the right thing for Arizona and the right thing for America. Even in normal times, bills like this make our communities less safe, not more. But especially now, at a time when federal agents are kidnapping law-abiding visa-holders and refugees off the streets and sending them to foreign prisons without any sort of due process, the last thing Arizonans need is more to fear. Thank you for having our backs, Gov. Hobbs."
