Convicted killer who escaped from prison captured in Mexico
(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A convicted killer who escaped prison custody in Delano, California, in December has been captured.
Mexican officials confirmed Cesar Hernandez was arrested by Mexican security forces during an operation Thursday night.
Multiple media outlets in Mexico reported Hernandez was captured during an operation in an area just east of Tijuana.
Baja California officials said the operation involved state forces AEL and Special Forces from the Mexican military.
According to reports, Hernandez was unarmed when he was taken into custody and no one was injured during Thursday night's incident.
In a statement, Baja California State Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramirez said Hernandez was responsible for the killing of Mexican police officer Abigail Esparza Reyes.
Reyes was an officer in the Baja California Security Force who was killed during an operation in the Colonia Barcelona neighborhood of Tijuana, about 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
