State of California sues Trump administration over tariffs

CERES, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The state of California is suing the Trump administration over President Donald Trump's tariffs on U.S. trading partners, Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta formally announced in a press conference Wednesday morning.

California is arguing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which President Trump cited to impose tariffs, does not grant Trump authority to enact tariffs without congressional approval on goods imported to the U.S.

The lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California and requests that federal agents be stopped from enforcing unlawful tariffs.

With this filing, California has officially become the first state to legally challenge the Trump administration over its sweeping tariffs.

According to Newsom, these tariffs have already cost California billions of dollars, and the effects will be felt "disproportionately" to any other U.S. state.
