Diamondbacks struggle in D.C.
Burnes struggles again as D-backs drop series finale to Nationals
WASHINGTON (KYMA, KECY) - The Diamondbacks made a late push, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome in a 5-4 loss to the Nationals Sunday afternoon.
Arizona gave up runs in each of the first three innings and couldn't fully recover, despite chipping away late. The D-backs plated runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh, but came up empty in the final two frames to close out a 2-4 road trip.
Gabriel Moreno led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Ketel Marte and Alek Thomas also drove in runs. Arizona brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. struck out looking to end it.
Corbin Burnes, in his second start with the D-backs, allowed four runs over five innings and struggled with command, but Arizona's bullpen held Washington to just one run over the final four frames to keep it close.
"We had a shot there late," Burnes said. "I've got to do a better job giving us a chance early."
Arizona heads home for its Chase Field opener Monday night against the Yankees.
