Festivities for Calexico’s 117th Anniversary gear up

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Calexico is gearing up to celebrate its 117th anniversary with a week full of events.

The city is celebrating its history through art, creativity, and community, starting with a brand new mural that will welcome visitors to the Camarena Memorial Library.

The mural, titled "Daydream," is created by Calexico native Mia Salinas. Her design chosen by the city to kick off a series of anniversary events honoring culture, imagination, and local talent.

"When I went to high school this shipping container was always here, but was always empty, so to be able to have this opportunity is really cool," said Salinas.

Library staff encouraged a theme that would make people feel inspired the moment they walked by.

"I just asked that the theme be something related, connected to the library, connected to reading books, family, creativity, imagination...all those things," said Lizeth Legaspi.

The mural is also a symbol of homegrown talent, a reminder that inspiration can come from right here in the Valley.

"It's just showing the people of Calexico we have so much talent here," said Mayor Pro Tem Victor Legaspi.

Salinas hopes this moment inspires the next generation of artists to dream big.

"Hopefully, I'm an inspiration to other kids out there or other people who are trying to pursue art," said Salinas.

The mural unveiling is just the beginning. Anniversary events will continue throughout the week, including the opening of the Lego World Art Exhibit at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center, and a time capsule opening at City Hall.

The public is invited to celebrate the unveiling of "Daydream" on April 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Camarena Memorial Library.
