MCAS Yuma Marines make heroic desert rescue

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A heroic rescue was made by Marines from Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma.

During a routine flight training last month, Marines aboard a King Stallion Helicopter spotted a man stranded in the California desert near Twentynine Palms.

After assessing the area, the Marines landed at the closest and safest location 500 meters downhill from the deserted man.

According to the Marines, the man had been there for two days without food or water, suffering from a broken leg, and clearly exhausted and in pain.

The man was then airlifted back to MCAS Yuma before being transported to Onvida Health.

Thankfully, the man is expected to make a full recovery.

The Marines say this rescue mission highlights their commitment to readiness, the aircraft's skillful capabilities, and the cooperation between military and civilian emergency services.
