Wisconsin Supreme Court election draws national attention

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Voters in Wisconsin are heading to the polls Tuesday to elect the next Justice in the state's Supreme Court.

The court's balance of power will shift on the results, which is drawing national attention.

Billionaire Elon Musk campaigned in Wisconsin Sunday night and handed out $2 million checks to voters, urging them to support the conservative candidate Brad Schimel.

Musk donated more than $3 million to the state's Republican Party and his PAC spent more than $12 million in advertising and campaign operations for Schimel.

Musk says congressional redistricting is just one of the reasons he calls the race important for the future of civilization.

"Normally, an election for a judge would not be that big of a deal. It just so happens, in this case, it could decide the control of he U.S. House of Representatives, which is a huge deal," Musk explained.

"I never could have dreamed that I would be fighting the richest man in the world," said Judge Susan Crawford, Schimel's opponent.

Judge Crawford has seen an influx of money coming from left-leaning supporters, with billionaire George Soros and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker donating big dollars on her behalf.

Abortion is another key issue set to come before the state's Supreme Court which voters say is important to them.
