Police in New Mexico provide latest details on the Young Park shooting

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Las Cruces police officials provided more details about the Young Park shooting during a press conference on Tuesday.

Police showed body cam video, 911 calls, and radio traffic radio sound from the incident.

"I do want to say this was not an active shooter event," said Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story.

Story said there was a car meet at the park. He said while a crowd was watching a car do "donuts" on the parking a dispute happened between two groups of people who had personal issues in the past.

Story said some of the intended targets were struck in the gunfire but also innocent bystanders.

Police showed a video of the vehicle performing donuts in the parking lot when the shooting happened and gunshots can be heard in the video.

Police then showed a body cam of the officers who first responded to the scene. In the video, you can see the officer run towards a victim who is on the floor and render aid.

Another body cam video shows an officer treating a woman who had head gunshot wounds.

All four suspects are charged with murder. Story all four suspects were arrested within 38 hours of the incident.

Story said they've recovered all four firearms involved in the shooting. He said they also recovered several firearms in a house. Police were able to recover those firearms and ammunition during a search warrant.

Story said all four suspects have a criminal history. Three of them had a criminal history together.

Rivas had shoplifting, possession of a controlled substance, and aggravated assault when he was younger, according to police.

Rivas had smuggling charged with DPS. Story said Rivas actually had a court hearing in El Paso on the same day of the shooting.

Story said all four suspects have a history of aggravated batteries, vandalism, sexual assault, possession of a controlled substance, fights, robbery and several recent aggravated assaults.

Story said one of the suspects was trying to sell firearms through social media.

"There is a lot of stuff happening at these car meets that are extremely dangerous," said Story. "Guns are involved, they're just out and used for different purposes."

Story showed videos at the press conference of several people with firearms.

Police showed a video of people using rifles at the meet using the firearms laser to record a video.

Story car meets have been a problem across the nation due to the number of people at the event and their behavior at the event.

Five weapons were recovered four handguns and a shotgun.

"Three of the handguns were reported stolen the other two are not entered but that doesn’t mean they’re; not stolen,” said Story.

Story said several people had sounded the alarms about the alarming juvenile crime in Las Cruces and in the state.
