Firefighters in North Carolina battle Polk County fires

POLK COUNTY, N.C. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - A helicopter was seen dropping a bucket of water over the Black Cove Complex fires in Polk County, North Carolina, on Monday.

The North Carolina (N.C.) Forest Service shared footage after a "wet front" moved over the fire area Monday morning, bringing about 0.05 inches of rain.

"Despite this, fire behavior remains active, and firefighters continue engaging the fire in an attempt to keep it from spreading, and threatening homes and structures," the service said.

"Aircraft, like the N.C. Forest Service helicopter in the video, are being used to drop water on the fire while bulldozers and firefighters on the ground build fuel breaks in the path of the fire's spread," the service added.

The N.C. Forest Service added local and statewide fire departments were "preparing and supporting structure protection near the fire" in case the blaze moves.
