Locals attend 29th Annual Relay for Life event
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The fight against cancer continues in Yuma County as locals attend the 29th Annual Relay for Life event.
The event started at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex, with attendees participating in a potato sack race as well as having a chance to smash a car with a hammer.
Organizers, like Amber Thornton, said it's more than a fundraiser as it is a community movement toward hope and support.
"Cancer touches everyone. Statistics say that one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer. So chances are that you or someone you love has been touched by cancer. We're here today for all different cancer types, for every life, every cancer," Thornton expressed.
The theme for this year's event is "There's No Place Like Hope" while the event marks 40 years of Relay for Life, which has grown into a worldwide effort, raising over $6.8 billion.
The event will go until 11:00 p.m.
