Americans give top reasons for not having children
(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The birth and fertility rates in the U.S. has been going down for years, and it's now at a historic low.
According to a report from the Pew Research Center, 37% of Americans under 50 say they are unlikely to have children in 2018, but rose 10% in 2023.
The report also said the reason people are not having kids has changed. For people over 50 who have not had child say it didn't happen, with them saying, "I wanted to but it was just bad luck."
However, for people under 50, they say "I'm not even trying," or "I don't want children." That's a big change.
There are other reasons why they didn't want children, with a portion them citing the costs, worries about the state of the world, like climate change, and 20% of people saying, "I just don't like children."
