Phoenix man sentenced for smuggling resulting in death

PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY) - A man was sentenced for transporting migrants, leading to the death of another person, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office District of Arizona.
On March 6, 2024, Steven Beltran-Lugo, 19, picked up two migrants near the border to take them further into the U.S.
When law enforcement followed the vehicle, Beltran-Lugo told the migrants to get out of the vehicle. One of the migrants jumped out while the vehicle was moving, causing a brain hemorrhage and internal bleeding, says the Attorney's Office.
The migrant who jumped passed away at the hospital two days later.
